Early Childhood Development (ECD)
The education project focuses more on Early Childhood Development (ECD). Skills for Life Kenya (SLK) run a nursery school for children from unprivileged families. SKL believes that the foundation for education starts at an early age. The nursery school takes children from the age of 3 – 10 years old. Currently the school population is 100 with four classes from baby class, KG1, KG2 & KG3. Since the parents cannot afford to pay for their children school fees, four volunteer teachers run the school.
Skills and Vocational Training (SVT)
As a response to curb unemployment for youth, SKL runs a skills building programme through vocational training. This programme focuses on skills building for young people who have either dropped out of school or did not get an opportunity to proceed to higher education as a result of the various challenges often faced by the youth in the village. The unemployed youth get sponsorship to acquire skills of their choice such us driving, carpentry, tailoring, catering, basketry, soap & detergent making. These skills help them enhance their chances of employability or help them start income generation.
Economic Empowerment Programme (EEP)
The EEP supports women and youth in creating opportunities for Income Generating Activities (IGA) and access to credit. This is done through support for providing training and funding small loans to women and young people as they set up small businesses.
Community Education and Awareness (CEA)
This programme seeks to educate the community on matters affecting their day-to-day life. This includes:
• educational camps
• health talks on HIV/AIDS
• mentoring for youth and women in business
• awareness and assistance on children’s rights
